She was convinced that the diversity of learners called for an all encompassing learning cycle. Bernice McCarthy drew on the research of Jung, Paiget, Vygotsky, Dewey, Lewin and Kolb to create an instructional system that would progress through the complete learning cycle using strategies that would appeal to all learners. This innovative approach, the 4MAT System, was the basis for the founding of her company, About Learning, Inc. in 1979.

The 4MAT System began in education and quickly spread into corporate and government as the value of this model became more widely recognized. It applies to two levels within these organizations, teaching and training and administration and leadership.

Bernice McCarthy encourages organizations to use multiple methods of problem solving and communication to help tap into the full potential of an individual. Instructional design, team processing, leadership skills, communication, conflict resolution, decision making, problem solving, and creativity are all encompassed in the 4MAT Model.

Bernice McCarthy is a prolific author and presenter and has conducted workshops and keynote sessions on effective learning at organizations worldwide including school districts across the U.S. and Canada as well as in higher education and government.

Dr. Bernice McCarthy conducts online training courses in partnership with About Learning's Corporate Division, most recently for the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Bernice McCarthy is a nationally known author on instructional design. She has written seven books including The 4MAT System (1987), About Learning (1996), 4MAT in Action (2000), About Teaching (2000), The About Teaching Companion (2003), Teaching Around the 4MAT Cycle (2006), and Hold on You Lost Me: Using Learning cycles to Create Training that Sticks (2007).

.Prapasara.Comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10697914215155821190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542528330773071254.post-69002605888363247232010-12-20T04:34:45.034+07:002010-12-20T04:34:45.034+07:004MAT - developed by Dr. Bernice McCarthy

Since then, the method has systematically and continuously been used, developed and linked to the newest research in the field.

From kindergarten teacher - to leading expert on learning

The idea for 4MAT came to her, when she was working as a kindergarten teacher in the seventies and became aware of the different ways children learn. She contacted researchers and theorists to learn even more and created 4MAT based on the sum of her knowledge. Today 4MAT is used worldwide - and Bernice McCarthy is renown as one of the leading experts on her field.

30 years of experience and research

The 4MAT method is built on 30 years of experience and research, and is a unique collection and linking of theories on human beings and communication. The method is constantly being developed by both Bernice McCarthy herself and her dedicated staff at About Learning, Chicago, USA.

Writer and keynote speaker

Through out the years Bernice McCarthy has presented numerous workshops and keynote sessions on effective learning at renowned organizations worldwide, and are also widely known for her books and publications on learning, for example: "About Learning", "Teaching Around the 4MAT Cycle" and "4MAT: 8Steps to Designing and Delivering Effective Training".

.Prapasara.Comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10697914215155821190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542528330773071254.post-50878424477490599322010-12-20T04:32:30.730+07:002010-12-20T04:32:30.730+07:00Learning Styles and the 4MAT System:
A Cycle of Le...Learning Styles and the 4MAT System:
A Cycle of Learning

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Living Laboratory: Volcanoes provides, wherever possible, learning activities and an instructional sequence that accommodate four major learning styles identified in the literature. The sequence used is modeled after the 4MAT System developed by Bernice McCarthy, author of 4MAT in Action: Creative Lesson Plans for Teaching to Learning Styles with Right/Left Mode Techniques.

This cycle of learning is based on a number of premises. First, different individuals perceive and process experience in different preferred ways. These preferences comprise our unique learning styles. Essential to quality learning is an awareness in the learner of his/her own preferred mode, becoming comfortable with his/her own best ways of learning, and being helped to develop a learning repertoire, through experience with alternative modes.

The fact that a student may have a preferred, most-comfortable mode does not mean she/he cannot function effectively in others. In fact, the student who has the flexibility to move easily from one mode to another to fit the requirements of the situation is at a definite advantage over those who limit themselves to only one style of thinking and learning. The four learning styles identified by McCarthy are:

Type 1: Innovative Learners are primarily interested in personal meaning. They need to have reasons for learning--ideally, reasons that connect new information with personal experience and establish that information's usefulness in daily life. Some of the many instructional modes effective with this learner type are cooperative learning, brainstorming, and integration of content areas (e.g., science with social studies, writing with the arts, etc.).

Type 2: Analytic Learners are primarily interested in acquiring facts in order to deepen their understanding of concepts and processes. They are capable of learning effectively from lectures, and enjoy independent research, analysis of data, and hearing what "the experts" have to say.

Type 3: Common Sense Learners are primarily interested in how things work; they want to "get in and try it." Concrete, experiential learning activities work best for them--using manipulatives, hands-on tasks, kinesthetic experience, etc.

Type 4: Dynamic Learners are primarily interested in self-directed discovery. They rely heavily on their own intuition, and seek to teach both themselves and others. Any type of independent study is effective for these learners. They also enjoy simulations, role play, and games.

Traditionally, instructional techniques commonly used in public schools best address the needs of the Type 2 Analytic Learner, with heavy emphasis on linear sequential processing of information.

This curriculum is designed so that all styles are addressed, in order that more than one type of student may be permitted to both "shine" and "stretch." That is, each lesson contains "something for everybody," so each student not only finds the mode of greatest comfort for him/her, but is challenged to adapt to other, less comfortable but equally valuable modes.

The instructional sequence suggested by Bernice McCarthy and used in this curriculum teaches to the four styles using both right- and left-brain processing techniques. This integration of styles and processing modes ensures that we are educating the "whole brain."

The diagram below illustrates the 4MAT cycle of learning. It represents graphically the teacher behaviors appropriate to each stage and style, and provides a framework for planning any lesson or unit, for any age level or content area.

.Prapasara.Comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10697914215155821190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542528330773071254.post-82677426012478835292010-12-20T04:24:13.090+07:002010-12-20T04:24:13.090+07:00The 4MAT model was originally developed by Bernice...The 4MAT model was originally developed by Bernice McCarthy in 1980. Kolb noticed that learners have different preferred learning styles. To simplify, learners are asking four different questions in relation to the learning process:

• Why? These learners want to know the reason for learning. Kolb calls them "Divergers".

• What? These learners want to get the facts and concepts. Kolb calls them "Assimilators".

• How? These learners want to practice and do something. Kolb calls them "Convergers".

• What if? These learners want to try out variations. Kolb calls them "Accommodators".

Kolb pointed out that each of the four groups of students is focusing on one section of a learning cycle. This cycle begins with identifying a reason to learn, formulating concepts about the subject, actively using the concepts, speculating about the results of using the concepts and trying them out in life elsewhere, and identifying new reasons to learn more. Kolb's research verified that learners were spread across the four types. McCarthy pointed out that different teaching styles were required for each stage of this learning cycle, and that accelerated learning models such as NLP were providing the tools to meet the needs of all four groups. The 4 MAT is almost the larger scale strategy of teaching. It can to be used to easily and quickly structure communication in a way that satisfies the information needs of the audience.

Using The 4 MAT In NLP Training

How does an NLP Trainer apply the 4 MAT? In simple terms, they could apply it by:
Explaining why the subject is worth learning. They can check that the "Why" question is answered for Diverges by then asking "So would this be of use to you?". If not, it makes sense to continue explaining or demonstrating "Why" until students are motivated.

Teaching the facts of the subject, and the design of the process if there is one. They can check that the information is conveyed adequately for the Assimilators with questions such as "What more do you need to know?"

Demonstrating the use of this information (e.g. demonstrating the process), which gives the trainees vicarious experience ("How"). Then giving them an exercise to practice using the information. To check that they are Converges are ready to do the exercise, ask, "What else do you need to know to do the exercise?" and screen out questions about things which "might happen" or speculative "What if..." questions (which will make more sense after the exercise).

Inviting questions and comments after the exercise. At this stage questions about applications outside the training room can be answered, including questions about what might go differently to the expected and demonstrated process. This particularly answers the needs of the Accommodators.

.Prapasara.

http://grad.snru.ac.th/file_thesis/1289635089%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%82%E0%B8%93%E0%B8%B2.pdf

http://thesis.swu.ac.th/swuthesis/Hea_Ed/Thama_L.pdf

http://www.thapra.lib.su.ac.th/objects/thesis/fulltext/snamcn/Sunisa_Keawkoon/Fulltext.pdf

http://khoon.msu.ac.th/full121/siriporn11939/titlepage.pdfPrapasara. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
